Intersectional Foundations in Working with Trans & Non-Binary Adults

 

Topics:

  • Learn about the identities represented within the LGBTQIA+ communities
  • Learn the difference between sexual orientation & gender identity
  • Critique the representation of gender diversity as a strictly white phenomena

Topics:

  • Deep dive on gender identity and gender presentation and how these vary by culture
  • Suggestion of ways to explore the complexity within an individual's gendered identity

Topics:

  • Review of terms and pronouns
  • Common microaggressions to avoid
  • Suggestions on how to take a more gender neutral and/or affirming stance

Topics:

  • Critique current discussions around gender given the existence of other gendered identities in pre-colonial groups in Mexico, Hawaii, and among indigenous groups in North America such as the Lakota nation
  • Highlights in modern transgender history and their fight for civil rights

Topics:

  • A sampling of transphobia experiences within families, schools, work settings, health care settings, and within the criminal justice system
  • Explore how these experiences vary by other identity factors such as race and how these experiences might show up in therapy
